Surface Profile Measurement Calculator

Achieving the correct surface profile is essential for coating adhesion and long-term performance. Too shallow and the coating may not grip; too deep and you risk coating failures or excessive material use. Our Surface Profile Measurement Calculator estimates the anchor pattern height you can expect based on your abrasive type, nozzle size, blasting pressure, and surface material. By using this tool, you can match your blasting setup to coating specifications, avoid costly rework, and ensure every project meets industry standards for surface preparation.

Estimated range

Estimate only. Field results vary with media quality, moisture, hose losses, technique, and substrate condition. Verify actual profile per ASTM D4417 (replica tape or gauge) or ISO 8503. Typical coating primers prefer ~1.5–3.0 mils; high-build systems may allow 3–4+ mils. Always check your project specification.

How this estimator works

Baseline pairs are derived from common industry guidance for blasting at ~90–100 PSI with a long venturi nozzle, 18 inch standoff, and perpendicular angle on mild steel. Size-to-profile examples for garnet (approximate): 100 mesh ≈ 0.5 mil, 80 mesh ≈ 1.0 mil, 40 mesh ≈ 2.0 mils, 16 mesh ≈ 4.0 mils. Other abrasives are scaled by typical cutting intensity: aluminum oxide and steel grit cut deeper; rounded media like glass bead or steel shot yield lower, rounded profile. Pressure, distance, angle, substrate hardness, nozzle type, and wear apply bounded multipliers. Results are shown as a central estimate with ± variance to reflect field scatter.
